Bakong Temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia 2023 Bakong, completed at the end of the 9th century, is an early capital of the Khmer empire. The central tower of Bakong, a stepped pyramid, represents Mount Meru, the temple mountain that symbolizes archetypical Khmer architecture. Built with bricks, laterite, and sandstone, it is considered the beginning of the classical period of the Khmer empire.
